| Italian | tromba |
| German | Trompete |
| French | trompette |
The trumpet is the high instrument of the brass family, changing tube length with valves while the lips vibrate. The Chinese 小号 means "small horn" relative to the tuba, not "small volume"; English trumpet and Italian tromba share a root, with German Trompete and French trompette as variants.
Watch out: the cornet looks close to the trumpet but differs in bore and colour; Chinese often calls both 小号 loosely.
