The saxophone is a single-reed woodwind: although its body is made of brass, the reed generates the sound, so it belongs with the woodwinds rather than the brass. Adolphe Sax devised it in the mid-nineteenth century; the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone are the common members, and Italian sassofono, German Saxophon and French saxophone all use his name.
Watch out: a brass body tempts listeners to call it brass; the saxophone and clarinet both use a single reed, but the sax has a conical bore and the clarinet a cylindrical one, so their tone and overblown intervals differ.
