| German | Oboe |
| French | hautbois |
The oboe is a double-reed woodwind with a conical bore; it overblows at the octave and has a focused, penetrating tone, often given pastoral or mournful lines. Orchestras traditionally tune to the A it plays; French hautbois literally means "high wood", while English oboe comes from Italian.
Watch out: the English horn (cor anglais) is often mistaken for an English instrument or a kind of horn; it is actually an alto oboe in F, a fifth below the oboe, neither English nor brass.
