The bassoon is the bass double-reed woodwind; its tube is folded back on itself in a U shape, making a long instrument manageable, and it usually supports the bass and harmony. Italian fagotto literally means "a bundle of sticks", describing the jointed tube; German Fagott, French basson and English bassoon name the same instrument.
Watch out: the bassoon is not simply a scaled-up oboe — its conical, folded bore gives it a distinct low register; the contrabassoon, an octave lower, is a separate instrument.
