The clarinet is a single-reed woodwind with a mostly cylindrical bore; it overblows at the twelfth and spans a wide range from soft to bright. The B-flat clarinet is the common orchestral type and sounds a major second below written pitch; Italian clarinetto, German Klarinette and French clarinette all derive from clarino, "small trumpet".
Watch out: Chinese 单簧管 (single reed) and 双簧管 (double reed) differ by one character but use one reed versus two reeds bound together; the colloquial 黑管 usually means the clarinet, not the oboe.
