Cabinet Impulse

A captured response of a real cabinet and mic, colouring the guitar

A cabinet impulse (cab IR) is an impulse response captured from a real guitar cabinet and microphone: it records the cabinet's frequency and time behaviour at a given mic position, and convolution applies that colour to a dry signal.

It differs from an EQ: EQ changes the balance of bands, while an IR captures the complete linear response, including phase and resonance. The usual mistake is to swap IRs casually — different cabinets, mics and positions differ greatly; changing the IR is changing the cabinet, not loading an EQ preset.
