Equalizer

Shaping tone and space by changing the level of frequency bands

An equalizer (EQ) changes the level of frequency bands: boost or cut a range to alter tone, clarity and space. Common types are parametric (frequency, gain and Q adjustable), graphic (a row of fixed-band faders) and shelving (shaping the whole top or bottom).

It is not a "quality enhancer": EQ changes the balance of what is already there; it cannot invent missing information. The usual mistake is to boost a little everywhere — that usually just makes things louder; real EQ is subtractive: remove masking and mud first, then decide what to add.
