Amp Simulator
Software that imitates a guitar amp and cabinet
Related
An amp simulator uses software (or hardware) to imitate a guitar amplifier: preamp gain, EQ, power stage and cabinet colouring can be rebuilt with algorithms or impulse responses. It lets you record without pushing a real amp loud.
It differs from a cabinet impulse (cab IR): an amp sim usually includes preamp and power stage, while a cab IR handles only the cabinet-and-microphone response. The usual mistake is to equate it with a distortion effect — distortion is one stage; the value is the colour and dynamics of the whole chain.
