WWV Wagner Works Catalogue
The Wagner work catalogue, in which the four Ring operas share WWV 86A–D across two decades
Related
WWV is the Wagner Werk-Verzeichnis number, compiled by John Deathridge, Martin Geck and Egon Voss in 1986. It lists 113 entries, including sketches, arrangements and unfinished stage projects, and is arranged broadly in chronological order.
The Ring breaks that order. Its four operas share WWV 86 and are distinguished by letters: Das Rheingold 86A, Die Walküre 86B, Siegfried 86C, Götterdämmerung 86D. They were composed across two decades, yet the letters follow the drama's sequence, not the dates. Tannhäuser, WWV 70, likewise covers the Dresden and Paris versions.
Wagner used opus numbers very rarely, so WWV is usually the work's only identity, and 86 alone is incomplete without its letter. WWV numbers works and sources together; the number is not a completion date.
