S. Liszt Searle Catalogue

Searle's Liszt catalogue, grouped by medium, with separate numbers for versions and arrangements

S. is the Searle number for Liszt, from Humphrey Searle's The Music of Liszt (1954, revised 1966), which built on Peter Raabe's 1931 catalogue. It groups works by medium — stage, choral, song, orchestral, chamber, piano — with roughly chronological order inside each group, and runs past 700.

The whole is not a timeline. Les préludes is S. 97, the B minor Sonata S. 178, the Hungarian Rhapsodies S. 244; the numbers mostly say which shelf a work stands on, not when it was written.

Liszt reworked obsessively, so one piece can hold several S. numbers: the Paganini Etudes are S. 140 in the first version and S. 141 in the final one; the Hungarian Rhapsodies are S. 244 for piano, S. 359 for orchestra and S. 621 for piano duet. Older books still add Raabe's R. numbers. S. identifies medium and version, not year.
