TrV Richard Strauss Works Catalogue

Trenner's chronological Strauss catalogue, whose entry numbers still are not dates and coexist with opus and AV numbers

TrV is Franz Trenner's Richard Strauss catalogue, published in 1985 and revised in 1999. It is arranged chronologically and contains close to three hundred entries, including juvenilia, revisions, arrangements and unfinished projects; among composer catalogues it is unusual in being chronological.

A chronological catalogue still does not make the number a date. Entries include reworkings and orchestrations, so numbers can be years apart, and Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40, is TrV 190 while the Four Last Songs are TrV 296 and appeared only after Strauss died. Many works carry both an opus number and a TrV number; works without an opus also receive an AV number from Mueller von Asow's catalogue, and the systems do not correspond.

TrV is therefore good for locating a work in Strauss's life, not for reading a year off the number. The number is an entry, not a calendar date.
