The tuba is the bass instrument of the brass family, with a wide conical bore and valves; it supplies the heavy low foundation of the band. Italian, German and French all write tuba, from Latin tuba, "trumpet"; the Chinese 大号 means "large horn" relative to the trumpet, not "loud".
Watch out: the euphonium looks like a small tuba but sits higher and has a narrower bore; the sousaphone is a circular tuba adapted for marching and should not be confused with the concert tuba.
