The French horn is a brass instrument whose tubing is coiled into a circle; the left hand works three or four valves while the right hand inside the bell adjusts tone and intonation. English calls it French horn, but the modern orchestral horn was largely developed by German and Austrian makers, and German simply says Horn (its ancestor the Waldhorn, "forest horn"); "French" is an English convention.
Watch out: the French horn is not French, and the English horn is not a horn at all but an alto oboe in F. Both national labels mislead.
