Quieto

Quiet and still — yet still with direction

Quieto is an expression mark: quiet, still, inward. It is more still than calmo, often in soft passages, long notes and sparse textures.

It is close to tranquillo, but tranquillo stresses serenity while quieto stresses withdrawal of sound. The usual mistake is to let quieto lose direction — quiet music still needs phrases and weight; stillness without direction is merely stagnation.
