Tranquillo

A calm flow — not a standstill

Tranquillo comes from Latin tranquillus, "calm, undisturbed". The music should flow evenly: a steady pulse, clear colour, phrases that no sudden accent breaks into.

It names a state, not a speed; tranquillo can sit in an andante or keep its composure in a faster passage. The usual mistake is to let calm become a standstill — without forward breath, quiet turns into absent-mindedness; under the stillness a small current must still run.

It appears in slow movements and codas, often beside andante and adagio; with sostenuto and dolce it marks off sustain, sweetness and calm from one another.
