Andante

A walking pace, roughly 76–108 beats per minute

Andante marks a walking pace, often around 76–108 beats per minute. The word comes from Italian andare, "to walk". It is one of the easiest terms to misplay: it does not mean "slow" but an unhurried stride — faster than Adagio, slower than Moderato.

One Andante can be a stroll and another a march; the difference lies in stride and accent. Judge it not by the dial but by whether the music has the momentum of walking: the phrase moves forward without hurrying.
