Calmo

Calm and even — neither rushed nor dragged

Calmo is an expression mark: calm, even, without disturbance. It does not fix a tempo: moderate or slow both work; the point is a steady pulse, an unforced tone and phrase endings that do not sag.

It is close to tranquillo, but tranquillo stresses serenity while calmo stresses evenness and self-possession. The usual mistake is to read calmo as "slow" — it asks for steadiness; dragging the tempo actually makes the music less calm.
