Letter of Direction

A written instruction to pay royalties to a named account or party

A letter of direction (LOD) is a written instruction from a rights holder to a payor: send a particular royalty to a named account or party. It is common in publishing administration, distribution changes and collective registration, and it redirects payment rather than transferring copyright.

Payors usually require the owner's signature, the works and shares, and account details, and may act only after confirmation. The usual mistake is to treat an LOD as a copyright assignment: it is a payment instruction, ownership still follows the contract, and wrong or duplicate letters can cause misdirected funds. This is general information, not legal advice.
