Digital Distributor

A service that delivers recordings to streaming platforms and collects royalties

A digital distributor delivers recordings to streaming platforms and digital stores, handling metadata, UPC/ISRC codes, accounting and splits. It usually charges a fee or commission, takes no ownership of the master, and is not a label or a marketing agency.

The usual mistake is to think distribution means promotion: distribution secures delivery and a payment channel, while playlist pitching, publicity and marketing are usually separate. Another error is treating a distribution deal as a copyright transfer. Ask which platforms are covered, what the cut is, and whether takedown and migration are free.
