Music Publisher
A company that administers song copyrights, issues licences and collects royalties
Related
A music publisher administers song copyrights: it registers works, issues mechanical and sync licences, collects royalties, and seeks covers, film and advertising placements. It deals with writers and compositions, not recordings; a label handles recordings, and the two are often confused.
In a publishing contract the writer usually assigns a share or administration right to the publisher, creating a publishing split. The usual mistake is to think publishers take money and do nothing: their value lies in registration, licensing channels and collection. Still, read the term, exclusivity and assignment clauses. This is general information, not legal advice.
