| German | Glockenspiel |

The glockenspiel is a row of metal bars struck with hard mallets, bright and short in resonance. German Glockenspiel literally means "playing bells", and English and French borrowed the word; Italian campanelli means "little bells". The Chinese 钟琴 refers to a bell-like sound, not to church bells.
Watch out: glockenspiel and celesta both sound bright, but the glockenspiel is struck directly with mallets while the celesta uses a keyboard to drive hammers against metal plates; Chinese 钟琴 and 管钟 (tubular bells) are also often confused, the latter being hanging long metal tubes.
