The flugelhorn is a B flat brass instrument with three valves and a mainly conical bore, giving a round, dark tone; it appears in brass bands and in the hands of jazz trumpeters. Italian flicorno, German Flügelhorn and French bugle each use a different word. German Flügelhorn literally means "wing horn", a name commonly linked to early hunting-horn shapes.
Watch out: flugelhorn, cornet and trumpet are easily mixed. The trumpet is mostly cylindrical and brightest, the cornet more conical and softer, and the flugelhorn the widest and darkest of the three. Chinese often calls all of them 小号.
