The cornet is a B flat (or E flat) brass instrument with three valves and a more conical bore than the trumpet, which gives it a softer tone; it is a staple of brass and military bands. Italian cornetta, German Kornett and French cornet à pistons all name it, the French adding "with pistons" to distinguish it from the valveless horn of the period.
Watch out: the Chinese 短号, "short horn", describes its compact shape, not a shorter tube — in B flat the cornet and trumpet have nearly the same tubing length. Among cornet, flugelhorn and trumpet, the cornet sits in the middle in brightness.
