The euphonium is a B flat tenor brass instrument with an almost entirely conical bore and a warm, broad tone, at home in brass and wind bands. Italian eufonio, German Euphonium and French euphonium (also baryton) all come from the Greek for "well sounding". In British brass bands it is usually written in treble clef, sounding a major ninth below the page.
Watch out: it is not a tuba — it is usually smaller and higher — and not a baritone horn, which has a narrower bore and a lighter, more trombone-like tone. Chinese uses 上低音号 and 次中音号 loosely.
