Feroce

With wildness and attack

Feroce is an expression mark: play with wildness, attack, grain. It appears often in Stravinsky, Bartók and twentieth-century works, demanding a biting colour and a percussive rhythmic edge.

It differs from energico: energico is forceful, feroce is fierce; it differs from drammatico too: drammatico is theatrical tension, feroce is more direct and physical. The usual mistake is to play feroce as "messy" — fierceness still needs precise rhythm and colour control.
