Delay

A copy of the sound played back after a set time

Delay makes a copy of the input and plays it back after a set time, creating an echo. It can be mono, stereo or ping-pong (left-right), and can sync to the beat (1/8, 1/4 notes). Parameters include delay time, feedback (how many repeats) and dry/wet.

It differs from reverb: delay is a discrete, countable echo, reverb a dense, continuous reflection. The usual mistake is to treat delay as "space" — delay is more often used for rhythm, emphasis and width; too much feedback turns the sound to mush and can run away.
