Daqu

The large song-and-dance suite of Tang and Song China

Daqu is the large song-and-dance suite of Tang and Song China: several sections of music, dance and song linked into one grand structure, used at court banquets and festivals. It organises song, dance and instrumental music in one suite.

It differs from faqu: faqu is more tied to ritual and court gatherings, daqu to banquet and spectacle; it differs from a generic suite too: daqu has fixed sectional functions. The usual mistake is to think daqu simply means a long piece — its point is the multi-section song-and-dance structure, not duration.
