Faqu
Tang-Song court music of ritual and refined gatherings
Related
Faqu is a category of Tang-Song court music: often tied to ritual, refined gatherings and court ceremony, with a clear, elegant style for voices and instruments, in contrast to the banquet spectacle of daqu.
It differs from daqu: faqu is more refined, daqu more festive; it differs from yayue too: yayue is state sacrificial music, faqu is closer to refined music inside the court. The usual mistake is to equate faqu with Buddhist music — it has religious roots but is not the same as temple ritual music.
