Qupai

A named tune template — one qupai, many texts and many moods

A qupai is a named tune template: it fixes a rough length, phrasing and melodic contour, while the text, instruments and region can change, so one qupai grows many versions. Titles such as "General's Order" or "Deep Night" name both a qupai and a specific instrumental piece.

Qupai form and banqiang form are the two great structural modes of Chinese opera: qupai form strings together named tunes, banqiang form develops one basic tune through metrical patterns. Knowing a qupai's name tells you where a piece comes from, not what it must sound like.
