Theme and Variations
One theme rewritten again and again — same frame, new surface
Related
Theme and variations rewrites one theme repeatedly: the harmonic frame or melodic outline stays, while rhythm, colour, texture, mode and tempo change. A variation may decorate, change character (a dance becomes a march), change mode (major to minor), or keep only the bass line (a ground).
The test is not "can it change" but whether we still recognise the theme on return. A good set shows a different face of the theme in each rewrite, so that when the theme comes back the listener has new ears.
