Rondo
The main theme keeps returning, the episodes keep changing
Related
A rondo is a form in which the main theme keeps returning, most often A–B–A–C–A: the A section is recognisable every time, the episodes B and C are different. It suits the end of a movement or a work — what returns gives security, what changes creates expectation.
The usual mistake is to treat it as a loop: the rondo's main theme stays the same or nearly so, while the episodes supply contrast; it differs from variation form — variation dresses one material differently, rondo leaves home and comes back.
