BWV Anh. Bach Appendix
The appendix to BWV, holding lost, doubtful and misattributed works once filed under Bach
Related
BWV Anh. is the appendix to the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis. Its numbers follow the main BWV sequence and hold works that cannot be securely placed: pieces lost or preserved only in fragments, works of doubtful authorship, and works once attributed to Bach but now given to someone else.
An appendix number says nothing about when a piece was written. BWV Anh. 114 and 115 are the two minuets from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, long printed as Bach and now usually credited to Christian Petzold. They still circulate under Anh. numbers because old scores and recordings were issued that way.
A piece may begin in the appendix and later move into the main catalogue or another composer's list; newly exposed spurious works may be added in turn. Anh. is a "pending" label, not a date and not a certificate of Bach's hand.
