Anh. Appendix Numbers
Appendix numbers in German catalogues, used for lost, doubtful and misattributed works
Related
Anh. is short for Anhang, the German word for appendix, and appears in several German-language catalogues. An appendix does not hold finished works from the main series but lost, fragmentary, doubtful, misattributed or arranged pieces; its numbers form a separate run.
It is not a chronology, and it is not a rank. In BWV Anh. the entries fall into three groups: works lost or surviving only in fragments, works of uncertain authorship, and works once given to Bach but now assigned elsewhere. The B-A-C-H Fugue, BWV Anh. 45, was long ascribed to Bach and is now credited to Justin Heinrich Knecht; Buxtehude's appendix holds thirteen spurious pieces.
As research changes, a work can move between an appendix, a main catalogue or another composer's list, while the old number survives on recordings. Anh. records status of attribution, not date or quality.
