Hess Beethoven Supplement Catalogue

Hess's supplement to the Beethoven collected edition, covering works the old edition left out

WoOOpusAnh. Appendix Numbers

Hess is Willy Hess's supplement to the Beethoven collected edition, published in 1957 as Verzeichnis der nicht in der Gesamtausgabe veröffentlichten Werke Ludwig van Beethovens. It covers what the 1860s complete edition left out: sketches, fragments, arrangements, folk-song settings and pieces discovered later. Hess also issued fourteen volumes of supplements.

Because the criterion is what the old edition omitted, Hess numbers are neither chronological nor exclusive. The Piano Trio WoO 38 is also Hess 48, and many works appear in both lists. A Beethoven search may need Op., WoO and Hess together.

The number marks a gap in the old edition, not a date or a verdict on quality. Hess is a research trail, not a timeline.
