The accordion is a portable keyboard instrument in which bellows drive air across free reeds, with a piano or button keyboard on the right hand and bass buttons on the left. English accordion and German Akkordeon share a root; Italian fisarmonica and French accordéon are the traditional names in those languages; the Chinese 手风琴 stresses two-handed bellows work.
Watch out: accordion and bandoneon are both free-reed bellows instruments, but the bandoneon is usually square, with a different button layout and a drier tone, and is tied to tango; calling both 手风琴 hides the difference (a common usage).
