Z. Purcell Works Catalogue
Zimmerman's analytical catalogue of Purcell, grouped by genre and giving versions separate numbers
Related
Z. is the catalogue number from Franklin B. Zimmerman's Henry Purcell, 1659–1695: An Analytical Catalogue of His Music (1963). It divides Purcell's output into sacred music, secular vocal music, theatre music and instrumental music; within each section the order is roughly chronological, and the numbers run into the 800s.
The whole is not a timeline. Abdelazer is Z. 570 and dates from 1695; Dido and Aeneas is Z. 626 and dates from 1689. The later number belongs to the earlier work, so number and date do not run in parallel.
Versions receive separate numbers. The song "If Music Be the Food of Love" appears as Z. 379a, 379b and 379c, one number for each surviving version. Z. separates genre and version first, date second.
