HWV Handel Works Catalogue

Baselt's Handel catalogue, grouped by genre, with roughly chronological numbering inside each group

HWV is the Händel-Werke-Verzeichnis number, published by Bernd Baselt in three volumes between 1978 and 1986. It groups Handel's music by genre: operas HWV 1–42, oratorios 46–71, then cantatas, concertos and keyboard works, with numbers running to 612 and gaps left for later finds.

Inside a group the order is roughly chronological, but the whole is not a timeline. Almira is HWV 1 and was first performed in 1705; Messiah is HWV 56 and dates from 1741. The numbers are fifty-five apart, the works thirty-six years, because the catalogue files them under different genres.

One work often has several numbers. The twelve Op. 6 concerti grossi are HWV 319–330, and the old Handel-Gesellschaft edition adds HG volume numbers. HWV sorts genre and shelf, not biography.
