RV Vivaldi Works Catalogue

Ryom's catalogue of Vivaldi, which replaced several earlier and conflicting numbering systems

RV is the Ryom number, from the catalogue the Danish scholar Peter Ryom compiled in the 1970s. It sorts Vivaldi by genre — concertos, sonatas, vocal works — and numbers within each field. The Four Seasons, for instance, are RV 269, 315, 293 and 297.

Before RV there were at least three competing systems, P. (Pincherle), F. (Fanna) and R. (Rinaldi), so one concerto could carry three or four names. RV gathered them into one, though older recordings and scores still print the old numbers.

RV is not a chronology either: within a genre the order is not chronological, so early and late works interleave, and a published set such as Op. 8 runs alongside the RV numbers. RV tells you which work; for when, look elsewhere.
