The ukulele is a four-string plucked instrument with a small body and nylon strings, made in soprano, concert, tenor and baritone sizes. English ukulele comes from Hawaiian ʻukulele (commonly said to mean "jumping flea"); Italian and French both write ukulele, German Ukulele, and Chinese also has 乌克丽丽.

Watch out: ukulele and guitar both use nylon strings, but the ukulele has four strings tuned g′–c′–e′–a′, where g′ is often an octave above c′ (reentrant), while the guitar has six tuned E–A–d–g–b–e′; treating the ukulele as a "little guitar" misleads about chords and range.
