TWV is the Telemann-Werke-Verzeichnis number for instrumental works, catalogued by Martin Ruhnke in 1984; vocal works were catalogued separately by Werner Menke as TVWV. A TWV number has three parts: genre, key and running number. The Viola Concerto in G is TWV 51:G9 — 51 for solo concerto, G for G major, 9 for its place in that group.

The system is by genre, not by date: 51 is the solo concerto, 55 the orchestral suite, 43 the quartet, 40 chamber music without continuo. Major keys use capitals and minor keys lower case, so TWV 55:g4 and TWV 55:G4 are different works.

Vocal and instrumental music sit in separate catalogues; a piece in a collection such as Tafelmusik may also be cited by its place in that print. Quote the whole number, since TWV 55 alone names only a genre. TWV fixes genre and key, not a year.
