Troppo
The word for too much, which non troppo uses to cap a mark
Related
Troppo means "too much" and is rarely a marking on its own; it appears in ma non troppo, "but not too much", and non troppo, "not too". It names the side that overshoots: allegro ma non troppo is still an allegro, merely one that refuses the extreme.
Troppo and non troppo are two faces of one idea: the danger and the brake. Ma non troppo is gentler than non troppo, carrying a hint of "you may let go, within measure", and is common in Romantic scores. Judge excess by more than the metronome: a tight tone, swallowed phrasing or a collapsed bass all signal troppo. It pulls against molto, one adding, one capping, and the difference shows plainly beside allegro.
