Transient Shaper
A processor that reshapes attack and tail separately to change punch and sustain
Related
A transient shaper adjusts a sound's attack and tail separately: more attack makes a drum hit harder, less attack softens it; more tail extends resonance, less tail tightens it. It reads the shape of the envelope rather than the level.
Unlike a compressor, it does not work from a threshold and does not flatten the overall level. It is most useful on drums, plucked instruments and loops; beside parallel compression, one can handle punch while the other adds density.
The usual mistake is to call it a fast-attack compressor. A compressor turns peaks down and flattens the sound; a transient shaper can change only the attack and leave the tail intact, which sounds and behaves differently.
