Tessitura
Where a piece mostly sits — not the same as range
Related
Tessitura is where a piece mostly sits: not how high or low it goes, but where it spends most of its time. It decides comfort and the colour burden of a singer or player.
It differs from range: range is the outer limit, tessitura the centre of gravity; a song with a modest range can still be exhausting if its tessitura stays high. The usual mistake is to check only the range — tessitura is where the real difficulty lives.
