The colour zones within one instrument or voice

Register is the set of colour zones within one instrument or voice: low register thick, middle steady, high bright, with a change of colour and technique at the breaks. It is not the range but the layering inside the range.

It differs from range: range is how far you can go, register is which colour layer you are in right now. The usual mistake is to think register is only high versus low — the same pitch in another production (chest/head voice, near the fingerboard/bridge) changes register; register is colour, not just frequency.
