Sync Agent

A specialist who pitches music to picture and negotiates sync licences

A sync agent pitches music to film, advertising and game projects on behalf of rights holders and negotiates sync licences: finding opportunities, quoting fees, handling contracts and invoices, usually for a commission. The agent handles licensing negotiations, not the copyright itself, and is not a distributor.

A sync often needs both composition and master clearance, and an agent may represent only one layer, so confirm whom they represent and what they can sign. The usual mistake is to treat a quote as permission: a written licence stating use, territory, term and media is still required. This is general information, not legal advice.
