SWV is the Schütz-Werke-Verzeichnis number, compiled by Werner Bittinger in 1960 and running past 500 entries. It follows the collections Schütz published in his lifetime: the Italian madrigals Op. 1 are SWV 1–19, the Psalmen Davids Op. 2 are SWV 22–47, and the Symphoniae sacrae and Musikalische Exequien follow in print order.

Print order is not composition order. A collection could gather music written years earlier, or revise an older piece, and works never printed in his lifetime were placed at the end by the editor. An SWV number therefore says which volume a piece belongs to, and where inside it.

Many works also have an opus number. The Musikalische Exequien are Op. 7 and SWV 279–281. SWV locates a text in the printed sets; it does not date the music.
