BuxWV Buxtehude Works Catalogue

Karstädt's Buxtehude catalogue, arranged by genre, so the number says nothing about when a work was written

BuxWV is the Buxtehude-Werke-Verzeichnis number, compiled by Georg Karstädt in 1974 and revised in 1985. It lists 275 works, with 13 doubtful pieces in an appendix. The order is by genre: vocal music first, organ works next, then keyboard suites and chamber music.

The number does not mark when a work was written. BuxWV 75, the cantata cycle Membra Jesu nostri, and BuxWV 161, the D minor Passacaglia, are neighbours on the shelf but not in time, and even within a genre the order is not strictly chronological.

A work may carry a second name. The fourteen trio sonatas were the only music Buxtehude published in his lifetime; the first seven are often called Op. 1, the next seven Op. 2, and all now sit at BuxWV 252–265. BuxWV identifies the piece, not the year.
