Sub-Publishing
Appointing a local company to represent foreign song rights and collect income
Related
Sub-publishing appoints a local company to represent a publisher's compositions in another country or territory: registering works, joining local collecting societies, and collecting and remitting royalties. The original publisher remains the rights holder; the sub-publisher receives a territorial agency right.
The usual mistake is to read sub-publishing as a sale of copyright: it is regional representation limited by term and scope, and the sub-publisher's fee and remittance schedule directly affect what the writer receives. For cross-border deals, ask which countries are covered, what the fee is, and how often statements arrive. This is general information, not legal advice.
