Sound Design

Creating sound for picture and music through synthesis, sampling and processing

Sound design is the craft of creating sound for picture, games and music: using synthesis, sampling, recording and processing to make what a scene needs but reality does not offer — spaceships, monsters, magic, interface cues. It covers timbre creation, editing, layering and spatial placement.

Work usually starts from a sound brief: how big or close the sound should feel, what material it suggests, what emotion it carries. Layers are stacked — low-end impact, midrange body, high-frequency detail — and glued with reverb, distortion and modulation. Game audio also needs interaction and variation so sounds do not repeat.

The usual mistake is to treat sound design as browsing a sound-effects library. A library is a start; design lies in choosing, transforming and combining, and one source can become something else through pitch shifting, resonance or granular processing.
