Rinforzando
Reinforce a note or a short passage — a push forward rather than a stab
Related
Rinforzando, written rfz or rf, means adding force to a note or a short passage so that it stands out from its surroundings. It may cover one note or several; volume, bow pressure or breath increase, but it does not demand the single blow of an sfz.
In colour it is more a thickening, a push forward than a sharp attack; the core of the sound becomes firmer. The usual mistake is to treat rfz and sfz as exact synonyms: many scores do use them interchangeably, but the common view is that rinforzando reinforces a passage while sforzando strikes one moment — check the context and the edition.
